BENGALURU: Sunday’s stone-pelting incident during a Ganesha idol immersion procession in Maddur of Mandya district has sparked a major controversy in Karnataka.

Hindu organisations have condemned the incident and expressed their outrage against the state government. Some Hindu leaders, including Tejas Gowda, have written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting his intervention and seeking protection for Hindus in the state.

Tejas Gowda has also requested a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the incident, citing concerns about the involvement of banned Islamist organisations.

He highlighted similar incidents in the past, including a petrol bomb attack during a Ganesha procession in Nagamangala and an attack on the  police in Mysuru’s Udayagiri. This year, Hindus are being terrorised by pelting stones during the Ganesha procession in Maddur town, he noted.

Gowda expressed concern about the growing fear among Hindus in the region and appealed to the Union Home Minister to intervene and order an NIA investigation. The local MP and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy has also been approached to bring the matter to the attention of the Union Home Ministry and request an NIA probe.
