BELAGAVI: A jail warder was brutally assaulted by a prison inmate at Hindalga central jail here allegedly after a dispute over following rules. The jail warder is currently undergoing treatment at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS).
The incident occurred a few days ago and while one particular instance has come to light, it is alleged that other prisoners have also been assaulting jail staff.
Prison inmate Rahil alias Rohan, who has been externed from Hassan and has been lodged in the high security wing, assaulted warder Vinod Lokapur as permission was allegedly granted late for a hospital visit. Lokapur had told Rohan that as per rules, the jail staff have to accord permission to visit a hospital. He was brutally attacked for the alleged delay in arranging the hospital visit.
Vinod said that such instances have occurred in the past too and brought to the notice of the higher-ups, but nothing has been done. The jail staff are fearing to turn up for work, unless some action is taken against such unruly prisoners, sources said.
