MANGALURU: The hijab controversy has raised its head again here with students of the Mangalore University College protesting against some Muslim girls being allowed to wear the headscarf inside classrooms.

The students, under the banner of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat, sat on protest outside the college campus at Hampanakatte demanding that they too be allowed to wear saffron stoles. They alleged that though it was decided at the recent college administrative committee meeting not to allow the hijab, Muslim students continue to wear the headscarf.

University registrar Kishore Kumar met the protesting students and heard them out. The students complained against the principal and some teachers and demanded action. They also sought a change of a student union leader.

The registrar assured the students that the Karnataka High Court order on the issue and the state government guidelines will be strictly implemented from tomorrow (May 27). Following this, the students ended their protest.

A meeting will also be held under the leadership of MLA Vedavyas Kamat on Friday.
