“Many studies and observations have shown that the risk of a heart attack increases during the winter season. The main reason is that blood vessels constrict and blood pressure increases, leading to more pressure on the heart and resultant heart attacks. Even cholesterol levels rise during the winter season due to the consumption of fried and junk foods. The lack of physical activity can also be a reason for heart attacks. Irregular heartbeats and infections are more common during the winter season. Many studies show that 30-40 per cent of heart attacks occur in winter season. Exercise and good diet can reduce the risk of a heart attack and it is very important to have a balanced diet”, said Dr Anupama V Hegde, a cardiologist in the city.
