Health dept directs tests on eggs after rumours about detection of carcinogenic agent

BENGALURU: The Health Department plans to address the concerns of people over rumours that eggs contain cancer-causing (carcinogenic) substances. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has instructed testing of all brands of eggs in the state.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSA) had declared that eggs are safe after tests conducted six months ago. But due to rumours floating that eggs contain carcinogenic substances, public anxiety has prompted the Health Department to act. The Health Minister has directed that eggs of all brands in the state be tested.

Of late, the claim that eggs contain carcinogenic agents has become a hot topic. People are worried and apprehensive to consume eggs. Hence, the Health and Food Safety Departments have stepped in to address the public’s concern.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said all brands should be tested because people are concerned. He also warned that factors that could cause cancer should be taken seriously, and if any wrongdoing is found, action will be initiated. People should not be worried, he said.

The FSSAI had conducted tests six months ago on eggs and the report stated there were no harmful substances in the eggs. Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Quality Control, Srinivas, informed Public TV that eggs being sold in the state are safe for consumption and added that there are no carcinogenic agents.
