SHIVAMOGGA: A police head constable attached to the West traffic police station, took his own life by hanging himself from the iron grill at the back of the police station premises. Mohammed Zakriya (55) had been suffering from severe back pain and was allegedly being harassed by a colleague, Nasir Ahmed.

Zakriya, who had written a death note mentioning these issues, had also called his friend Adil asking him to take care of his family and about having breakfast together on Thursday. Adil said, “He called me and said he will come in the morning and that I should treat me to idlis. He also asked me to take care of my house”.

Zakriya had taken leave for a few months, but had returned to duty just three days ago. On Wednesday night, he had been on duty near the Shivamogga bus stand and had returned to the police station with a nylon rope, indicating that he had planned the act.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the police department and the public, raising concerns about the mental health and well-being of police personnel. The police department is considering plans to conduct a special workshop and provide counselling services, including Tele-Manas, to its staff.

Police Superintendent Nikhil B has visited the police station to inquire into the matter, and an investigation is under way. “Zakriya had joined duty just yesterday and was on long leave for treatment of back pain. Early on Thursday morning, he committed suicide after leaving behind a note near the bathroom. He also posted a message on our WhatsApp group and we have informed the family about it. He has mentioned about his health and also about harassment by a constable. Based on the family’s complaint, we will proceed with the investigation”, he said.
