BENGALURU: A single-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court has granted conditional relief to Kannada actor Chetan Kumar, popularly known as Chetan ‘Ahimsa’, who faced deportation after the cancellation of his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card by the Union government.

Chetan was given an Overseas Citizen of India card in 2018. But the Union government cancelled his OCI card and visa last week  over allegations that he was involved in many unlawful activities, created enmity between communities and indulged in anti-national activities. The central government issued a notice to the actor, but said it was dissatisfied with his reply and cancelled the OCI card.

Chetan’s lawyer argued that it was wrong to take action without hearing his version. At this time, both the central and state governments defended the government’s action. Chetan has also made objectionable statements against the judiciary. The central and state government prosecutors, additional Advocate general and advocate general argued on behalf of the governments.

After hearing arguments from both sides, high court judge Justice M Nagaprasanna granted conditional relief to actor Chetan. As per the conditions, he should not tweet about the judiciary or post on any social media. The court also warned that he should not comment on pending cases. The court has also given him protection from any action until June 2.
