HAVERI: Just when the state government has announced a Rs 4 hike per litre in the price of milk, the Haveri milk union has slashed the procurement price by Rs 3.50 per litre, dealing a blow to dairy farmers.
The cut in price is effective from March 28, leading to anguish among farmers. The milk union was giving Rs 43 per litre of buffalo milk and Rs 30.50 per litre of cow milk, but it has now slashed the prices citing losses.
Now, Havemul has reduced the price of buffalo milk to Rs 39.50 and cow milk to Rs 27 per litre. The Havemul director’s order says that the prices of milk products has dropped and it had suffered losses by giving higher prices to milk producers. In order to minimise the losses, the procurement price of milk has been cut, it said.
However, farmers have questioned the cut in procurement prices when the retail price has been increased by Rs 4 per litre.
