HASSAN: A police constable stabbed his wife to death with a knife on the premises of the District Superintendent of Police office on Monday, allegedly over property issues. The deceased has been identified as Mamata.
Over the last 4-5 days, constable Lokanath, posted at Hassan Town police station, and his wife Mamata were involved in a dispute over property and money. Today, the wife had gone to the SP’s office to file a complaint against her husband. Lokanath had fled after killing his wife, but was later arrested by the police.
Superintendent of Police Mohammed Sujeetha, who visited the scene, said, “Mamata was allegedly stabbed by her husband Lokanath. The couple were involved in a dispute for the last three or four days. Fed up with Lokanath’s harassment, Mamata came to the district police office today to file a complaint against him. Lokanath was stalking her, stabbed her hard in the chest with a knife on the office premises. Mamata was found lying in a pool of blood and was rushed to the nearby district hospital by the police. Unfortunately, she did not respond to treatment and succumbed to her injuries.”
A relative of Mamata alleged that the accused had been harassing Mamatha for dowry, residential site, and gold items. “He had been torturing her relentlessly. We had given four gunta (0.10 acres) of site during their wedding, and we had even agreed to give an additional 0.10 acres of land near Channapatna as he had made a demand. Everything was finalised. It was a love marriage and they had been together for 17 years, and they have two children.”
Further investigation is under way.
