BENGALURU: A software engineer committed suicide by dousing herself in petrol and setting herself on fire in HAL police limits. The incident occurred on January 12 and the victim was identified as Suhani Singh (25).
Police said that Suhani was being harassed by her uncle Praveen Singh, who threatened to share her private photos and videos with her parents. Praveen Singh has since been arrested.
Praveen Singh allegedly called Suhani to meet him at a hotel near ITPL on January 12. Upset over the constant harassment, Suhani purchased petrol, took it with her to the hotel where she set herself on fire in front of Praveen Singh. She was immediately shifted to Victoria Hospital, but she did not survive.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Dr Shivakumar Gunare said, “The victim was being harassed by her uncle. Both were working in Bengaluru and knew each other for the last few years. Praveen had booked a room in a hotel and forced Suhani to visit him, threatening to share the photos and videos. The victim had got the petrol herself and set herself on fire. As per our investigation, so far they had a good relationship and she would even go out on trips with Praveen Singh and his wife. But, of late, he had started harassing her, due to which she committed suicide”.
It is also suspected that Praveen Singh had been harassing Gauthami, another techie hailing from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh who ended her life last Thursday. Gauthami had had jumped to her death from the fifth floor of a paying guest accommodation at Prashanth Layout in Whitefield around 7 pm last Thursday.
