KALABURAGI: Newly-elected Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was given a grand welcome on his first visit to his hometown ever since he took up the responsibility of leading the party.
Earthmovers were used to shower petals and place a massive garland on his vehicle near Kalanur as he entered Kalaburagi from the airport. A huge crowd too had gathered to welcome him and raised slogans. Kharge arrived at the airport around 10.30 am.
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee is also organising a massive event to celebrate Kharge’s elevation as AICC president and a Kalyana Kranti convention will also be held at the N V Maidan in the city later in the day. About 2-3 lakh people are expected to participate in the convention in which the party’s national and state leaders will also take part.
Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, KPCC president D K Shivakumar, party state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, KPCC working president Eshwar Khandre, M B Patil and other leaders are expected to be present. The entire city has been decked up for Kharge’s welcome and the police have made strict security arrangements.
