BENGALURU: The state government is planning to introduce another Infrastructure Limited to reduce the burden on Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The BBMP, which has already been relieved of its solid waste management responsibilities, is now set to be freed from the responsibility of handling major infrastructure projects.

The state government is planning to create a new entity, the Bengaluru Smart Mobility Infrastructure Limited (BSMIL), to handle major infrastructure projects in the city. This new entity will be responsible for handling projects such as elevated roads, flyovers and tunnel roads.

The government is planning to introduce a Bill in the upcoming budget session to give shape to this new entity. The new entity will function independently, similar to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The new unit will take over the responsibilities of Smart City Limited, which will be dissolved. The BBMP will be relieved of its responsibilities in handling major infrastructure projects, and the new entity will take over.

Tushar Giri Nath, Chief Commissioner of BBMP, said a new unit will come into existence like Metro, water and electricity supply services. “An independent government unit, it will manage major road works in Bengaluru. There is a possibility that the burden on BBMP will be reduced further”, he noted.
