KOPPAL: Three members of a family were arrested on the charges of forcing their daughter to get initiated into the banned Devadasi system.

The incident has come to light after six months, after a complaint was filed at Munirabad police station on Monday  by Purnima, who is a Devadasi rehabilitation scheme officer.

Police have arrested the victim’s father Yamanoorappa Bharamappa Mundalamani, mother Huligevva Yamanurappa Mundalamani, her elder sister Mukavva Hanumappa Harijan and Hanumappa Marieerappa Harijan.

According to the FIR, the victim Lakshmavva’s family members took a vow at the Huligemma temple in Koppal taluk to mark the offering to the goddess.

Lakshmavva’s family took her to the river bank near Sri Huligemma temple in May, where they gifted her white and red pearls, adorned her with a chain which had a locket with the image of the goddess.

The victim is likely to be taken to the Swadhara Centre after her health check-up. The complainant had sought action against the three individuals who initiated the victim into the banned practice.
