The deceased was identified as Tabassum Savadatti (19), hailing from Bailhongal town. She was working in a call centre in Bengaluru where she had joined just a month ago. Her father is an autorickshaw driver.

Tabassum’s family members have alleged that she may have been raped and an attempt made on her life as there was a wound on the back of her head and cigarette burns on her face and body.

An unknown man sent a WhatsApp message to Tabassum’s mother.

An unidentified man admitted her to the hospital, but he escaped with Tabassum’s phone after he got to know that a medico-legal case would be registered. On Wednesday night, her mother received a WhatsApp message from Tabassum’s mobile phone.

The WhatsApp message read, “Tabassum’s phone is inside her small bag. Is she okay? The phone was broken when she got off the bus. I didn’t have your number to inform you about the situation. I took her SIM and I am texting you from my mobile phone. I could not meet you because people gathered in the hospital were talking about a police complaint. I will break her SIM and please purchase a new number and do not disturb me.”

APMC police station, Belagavi.

The incident occurred within the APMC police station limits.
