BENGALURU: Haphazard parking on side roads in the city has become a nightmare for drivers. In response, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has begun preparations for towing away vehicles obstructing traffic flow.

One towing vehicle has already been purchased, and four more are expected to be added soon across the city’s municipal zones. Especially for those who park their vehicles haphazardly on the roadside will be targeted.

Traffic congestion, traffic‑flow problems and parking issues have increased in Bengaluru. Vehicles are parked on the roadside and in streets for months on end, creating problem to move other vehicles.

Now the GBA, in collaboration with the traffic police, has planned to tow vehicles. “We will tow away vehicles parked on the roadside, in front of houses and on footpaths, and will not only impose fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, but levy penalties for footpath usage”, according to the GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao.

Furthermore, five municipalities will fall under the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s jurisdiction. Each municipality is set to purchase towing vehicles. The GBA chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao announced that after purchasing the towing vehicles and finalising tenders within the next month, towing operations will likely start.
