BENGALURU: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is planning to create designated parking zones in Bengaluru to raise revenue for white-topping of roads. The plan involves constructing parking zones on various roads and recovering the costs of road construction, particularly for white-topped roads, through parking fees.

The (GBA) has submitted a proposal to the government to create designated parking zones on certain roads in Bengaluru. The civic body aims to generate revenue and manage traffic congestion through this initiative.

According to Bengaluru traffic police data, there are approximately 1.20 crore vehicles in the city, with two-wheelers accounting for 82 per cent of them. The increasing number of vehicles on the road has led to congestion and parking challenges.

The cost of constructing white-topped roads is nearly ten times higher than that of asphalt roads. However, the GBA is exploring the possibility of introducing paid parking to recover this additional cost.

The civic body is also considering bringing roads constructed under the TenderSure and Bengaluru Smart City projects under the parking system.
