CHIKKABALLAPUR: A notorious gang of burqa-clad women thieves has been caught by the police in connection with a gold jewellery theft case reported in Chintamani one year after the crime. The stolen articles were also recovered from them.

The gang, consisting of five women, had entered Saundarya Fashion and Jewellers in Chintamani posing as customers, and stole a box containing 78 gm of gold ornaments worth Rs 7 lakh. The theft was captured on the shop’s CCTV camera, which helped the police identify and track down the gang.

After a year-long investigation, the Chintamani police finally apprehended the gang, which included Nagma, Zareena, Nageena, Naveena, and Mubeena, all from Kolar. The police recovered the stolen gold ornaments and returned them to the shop owner.

Police Superintendent Kushal Chowksey told reporters, “On July 21 last year, the theft case was registered at Chintamani police station. As per the complaint, five burqa-clad women entered the store and stole a box of earrings of diverting attention. We have now arrested the women and recovered 70 gm of the stolen jewellery”.

In August, they had attempted a theft at Bangarpet and they had been arrested. They are residents of Kolar and are involved in beedi rolling work. They travel by bus and an autorickshaw driver also helps them move around, the SP said.
