GADAG: A gang of three robbers broke into a petrol bunk, threw chilli powder at the face of an attendant who was sleeping inside and made way with cash and other valuables after breaking open an almirah at Sharanabasaveshwara Nagar in Gadag-Betageri in the wee hours on Thursday.

The robbers arrived at the Sri Sai Petrol Bunk around 2 am, broke the glass door and threw chilli powder at the face of attendant Fakiresh, who was sleeping inside. They then flashed sharp weapons, hit him with chairs and tables and took away cash and other articles kept in the almirah.

Recently, the three CCTV cameras at the petrol bunk had stopped working after a lightning strike and only one was working. The robbers had also cut off power supply in the locality before committing the robbery and CCTV cameras in houses close by also did not record the robbery.

Fakiresh said he could not get a glimpse of the robbers as he had chilli powder in his eyes. “I later called the manager and informed him about the robber”, he said. The Gadag-Betageri police visited the spot and registered a case. Further investigation is under way.
