BENGALURU: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an improvement notice to the 93 hotels in the city.
Why has FSSAI issued notices to these hotels?
In the last three months, the FSSAI officials raided many hotels and food joints in the city and inspected the places. They have issued warnings to hotels that have failed to maintain hygiene and do not have health certificates.
- Some hotels lack food licence or registration, while others have not renewed theirs.
- Lack of cleanliness in hotels.
- Workers in some hotels do not wear aprons, hand gloves, face mask, hair covering cap or shoes.
- Lack of cleanliness while preparing snacks, sweets and drinks.
- Cleanliness is not maintained in the kitchen, storage, or sales areas.
“We regularly inspect all the hotels and food joints in the city. In the last three months, after inspection, we have issued improvement notices to nearly 100 hotels. The main reason for issuing this notice is lack of cleanliness maintained in the kitchen. We also notified those who have not registered or do not have licenses”, said Dr Shamla Iqbal, Commissioner for Food Safety, FSSAI.
“If we have doubts about the food they prepare, we take a sample of it for testing and send it to the lab. If it turns out to be of poor quality, then we will take action. Initially, the hotel owners register their business, but when the business grows, they do not apply for the requisite licences. The raw material should be of good quality. Some owners make necessary changes after we send improvement notices to them”, she added.
“The FSSAI has given notice to some hotels for not maintaining hygiene, storing raw materials with expired dates, and having no health certificates. They had inspected even street food joints. They sent notice to some of the hotels and we will follow FSSAI rules”, said P C Rao, president of Bruhat Bangalore Hotels Association.
