HASSAN, MADIKERI: Three estate workers, including a woman, were badly injured when they were attacked by an elephant at Hulemakki village in Belur taluk on Friday. The injured have been admitted to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) for treatment.
The elephant entered the estate belonging to Hamid and suddenly attacked the workers. It picked up the woman and a man with its trunk and flung them to the ground. There were about 15 workers at the estate at that time.
The other workers ran for their lives and raised an alarm following which the elephant entered the neighbouring estate belonging to Made Gowda and attacked another worker, Ganesh. The elephant picked him up with its trunk and threw him to the ground and also stomped on him. The worker sustained injuries in the head too.
Range Forest Officer Shilpa visited the hospital and inquired about the condition of the injured.
In another incident, two motorcycle riders were attacked by a lone tusker near Attimangala close to Siddapura in Kodagu district. Ramshad and his pillion rider were on their way from Arekadu to Nelyahudikeri when they were attacked. Both have been admitted to the Siddapura government hospital.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider had a narrow escape from a tusker which was standing by the roadside amidst thickets on Charmadi Road. A video has since gone viral on social media.
In the video, shot by a youth, a large tusker, locally known as Bhyra, is seen standing by the roadside when the unidentified motorcycle rider approaches the spot. The youth shooting the video tries to warn the motorcycle ride by whistling, but the latter passes the elephant completely unaware of the danger. The elephant can be seen coming on to the road seconds after the motorcycle rider had passed.
A herd of 10 elephants, including calves, was spotted at Igur village in Sakleshpur taluk trying to cross a road. In a video, the herd can be seen entering a coffee estate on spotting people. Vehicles on either side of the road had stopped waiting for the herd to cross.
