BENGALURU: Thousands of fish have died in the Doddakere in Anekal, a suburb of Bengaluru, due to chemical and sewage contamination.
The lake is being polluted by untreated sewage from the Anekal Town Municipal Corporation’s Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and chemical waste from nearby factories.
A massive number of dead fish floating on the lake’s surface, posing a threat to various bird species that inhabit the area. The decaying fish have also led to a foul smell around the lake, making it difficult for people to walk along the roads nearby.
Locals allege complete negligence of officials from the Minor Irrigation Department and Anekal Town Municipal Corporation, saying they have failed to address the issue of pollution in the lake.
“Doddakere is a popular lake in Anekal. There were a good number of fish in the lake in these. But contaminated water from STP and chemicals caused the death of huge fishes. A fish weighs at least 10-15 kg. This is very very bad and none of the officers have come here. The dead fishes are floating, and a foul smell is coming from the lake. Fish traders come her from Jigani, Chandapura and the surrounding areas. The poisonous fishes may affect people’s health also. The authorities concerned should visit the lake and take necessary action, they should protect the environment and prevent water pollution”, said a local resident.
