RAMANAGARA: A case has been registered against an 18-year-old woman, identified as Sowmya, hailing from Hassan, for allegedly entering into a child marriage with 19-year-old Vasanth, who hails from Channarayapatna. The incident occurred in Kudur police station limits of Magadi taluk.

Sowmya and Vasanth, who were in a romantic relationship, got married at the Chowdeshwari temple in Alur village last week. They shared photos of their wedding on social media, which caught the attention of the Child Rights Protection Authority in Hassan. Upon investigation, it was found that Vasanth was still below the legal marriage age of 21, making the marriage a child marriage.

The Magadi Child Development Project Officer filed a complaint with the Kuduru police station, leading to the registration of an FIR against Soumya and the temple priest. The Child Rights Protection Authority visited the spot and conducted an investigation.

The Child Marriage Prohibition Act prohibits marriage before the age of 21 for men and 18 for women. The authorities have taken action against Sowmya and the temple priest for violating this law.
