Farmers anxious over damage to maize crop due to heavy downpour

HAVERI: Heavy rains have left farmers of the district in distress. The relentless heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused maize stalks to sprout prematurely. Farmers are under distress in Malluru village in Byadgi taluk.

  

Shivnagouda Solabagoudra, a local farmer, cultivated maize on his three-acre land and was expecting a good harvest. However, the continuous rainfall has ruined his crop.

About 80 per cent of farmers in the district grow maize, and the rain has left them in distress. The premature sprouting has damaged the maize, rendering it useless.
