KOPPAL: A wolf has given birth to five cubs at the protected wolf sanctuary in Bankapura. According to Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre, this indicates a growth in the population of Indian gray wolves, which are endangered.

The Forest Department has taken measures to protect the approximately 332-hectare Bankapura wolf sanctuary, which falls under the Gangavathi wildlife division. This sanctuary provides a safe haven for various wildlife species, including wolves, leopards, peacocks, hyenas, foxes, hares and porcupines, etc. The minitser informed that the department has also taken strict measures to prevent poaching (wild animal hunting).

Last month, a wolf in the same thick forest gave birth to eight cubs. Now, another wolf has given birth to five cubs. To ensure the newborn cubs’ safety, the department has installed cameras near the dens and advised visitors to avoid disturbing them. Currently, the wolf population in this forest has increased to 40-45.
