Elephant census taken up in forest areas along Karnataka borders

CHAMARAJANAGAR: An elephant census has been taken up in 10 forest regions of the state in the border areas including Bandipur, BRT tiger reserve and Nagarhole.

On the first day on Thursday, only observation was carried while on the second day on Friday, elephant dung was counted on both sides of the transact lines. The dung was counted for every 2 km along the transact lines.

The census is being coordinated across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the exercise is expected to help mitigate man-elephant conflict.

Some lakes are overflowing after the recent rain.

Meanwhile, after the recent heavy rain, three lakes in Bandipur are overflowing. The Sandana check dam in Hanur taluk is also full after heavy rain in Martahalli and surrounding areas. Several water bodies are also full, bringing relief to domestic and wild animals.
