HASSAN: Eight people died on the spot, and over 12 were seriously injured during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at Mosalehosahalli village in Hassan district after a speeding truck lost control and jumped the divider, running over people going on the adjacent carriageway. The injured were rushed to local hospitals for treatment.
The incident occurred when the truck, which was heading to Holenarasipur from Hassan, crashed into a two-wheeler, then hit a divider and ran over the procession. The authorities, including the district deputy commissioner and Superintendent of Police, have launched an investigation into the incident.
The truck driver, Bhuvanesh, suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Earlier, Congress MP Shreyas Patel said that five people have died. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. He demanded a proper investigation into the accident. “Today is a dark day. They work to treat the injured. I have asked that police department to check CCTV footage and take action. The incident should not have happened,” he said.
The accident has claimed the lives of five engineering students from Mosalehosahalli Government Engineering College. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for action against the police and authorities for alleged negligence. The local MLA and MP have also demanded a thorough investigation and compensation for the victims’ families.
