Despite receiving ₹1,500 crore funding from Azim Premji Foundation for the programme, officials’ negligence has led to delays. Instead of eggs, children are being given bananas and chikki. When students ask for eggs, officials reply that they would only provide alternatives, it is said.
Under the midday meal scheme, bananas and chikki can be given to only those children who are not eating eggs. The programme, intended to provide nutritious food, has been ineffective due to the department’s laxity in implementation.
The Azim Premji Foundation had signed a three-year agreement with the government to provide funds for the programme. However, the Education Department’s lack of interest has hampered 1its success.
The Azim Premji Foundation conducted a survey on the implementation of their project in 357 schools across four divisions. The survey revealed that eggs were not distributed in around 66 schools. Instead of eggs, chikki and bananas were given to the students. Also, only 30 grams of chikki was given instead of the recommended 35-40 grams.
The survey revealed the negligence of Education department officials in implementing the programme. Following this, the Education Department has woken up to the lapses of officials.
The Commissioner has issued notices to 50 Block Education Officers (BEOs) from 26 districts, 48 Project Managers, and Nutrition Scheme Assistant Directors.
