UDUPI: A man slit his wife’s throat with a curved sword under the influence of alcohol on Saturday night at Basrur in Kundapura taluk. He then danced, holding the weapon in his hand.
The incident occurred at a residential locality in Basrur. The victim has been identified as Anitha (38), who is in a critical condition in hospital. The accused is Lakshman a.k.a Ramesh.
The couple were working at the farmhouse of Kashimath and had moved to Udupi four months ago. On Saturday night, Lakshman slit his wife’s throat, leaving her seriously injured. He then locked the house from inside and started dancing with a sword.
Locals broke open the window and found Anita lying in a pool of blood. The fire brigade and police arrived at the scene upon receiving a complaint from the neighbour. Anitha was rushed to a private hospital in Manipal, where she is undergoing treatment.
The locals claimed that Lakshman was behaving weird as if he was possessed. The police and fire department personnel had to use tear gas to control the situation. The police opened fire and arrested Lakshman after a struggle that lasted for about an hour and a half.
A case has been registered at the Kandlur police station. The exact reason behind the incident is not known yet.
