Drug raid: KMC suspends 7 students, cancels contracts of two doctors

MANGALURU: A week after the police conducted a raid, the KMC Hospital management board has suspended doctors and medical students who were involved in ganja and drug peddling cases, as part of the disciplinary proceedings.

The KMC hospital has suspended two doctors who were caught in drug peddling case and terminated the contracts of two other doctors. The remaining seven medical students were suspended from the college.

Dean and professor of community medicine at KMC, Mangaluru, Unnikrishnan informed Mangaluru Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar about the disciplinary action taken.

The KMC management has terminated the contracts of Dr Sameer, medical officer at KMC Hospital, Attavar, and Dr Manimaran Muthu (28), medical surgeon at KMC, Manipal, Udupi district, who hails from Tamil Nadu. It has also suspended Dr Kishorilal, Dr Nadia Siraj (24), Dr Varshini Prati (26), Dr Riya Chadda (22), Dr Ira Bhasin (23), Dr Kshitij Gupta (25) and Dr Harsh Kumar V S.

Mangaluru police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar told media persons, “The investigation will be conducted as per law. Only a handful of people were involved in the crime. Those arrested lived in rented houses, PG accommodations and flats. KMC is an esteemed organisation and will not ignore such incidents. They have taken disciplinary action against the doctors and students and extended complete cooperation to us. Searches and raids are an ongoing process and the police working hard to bust drug rackets and arrest the peddlers”.

Managaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said action against drug rackets is an ongoing process.

“The sole purpose of the arrested peddlers was to make easy money. The prime accused has contacts in Delhi and Hyderabad. We will keep a watch on sensitive places and gather information. We will conduct a meeting wioth people who are running PG accommodations, and office bearers of apartment associations. We have instructed them to keep a watch on their neighbours also”, he noted. “We have instructed all police stations to keep an eye on isolated areas”, Shashikumar noted.
