Doctors leave surgical mop in woman’s stomach after cesarean section delivery

KALABURAGI: Doctors at the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital performed a cesarean, but allegedly left behind a surgical mop and cotton inside the woman’s stomach. The case of medical negligence has come to light after the woman complained of severe pain in her stomach ever since the surgical procedure.

The incident occurred on February 5 when pregnant Bhagyashri underwent a cesarean section surgery. The doctors who performed the surgery left a surgical mop and cotton inside her stomach. The patient did not realize what had happened immediately. However, a week later, she began experiencing stomach pain. When she underwent scanning, the doctors’ negligence came to light.

Surgical Instruments (Symbolic picture)Later, she underwent another surgery at a primary health center in Afzalpur, where the surgical mop and cotton were removed from her stomach. However, the doctors at GIMS Hospital have denied the allegations.

Reacting to the incident, District Surgeon Dr Asna Beg said that a pad was placed inside the patient’s stomach to stop bleeding after delivery. The patient was supposed to return after two days to get it removed it, but she did not come, the doctor claimed.

Dr Beg added that the patient is currently doing well and not facing any complications.
