BENGALURU: Senior IPS officer Alok Kumar on Thursday took charge as Director General of Police-Prisons. On his very first day in office, he conducted a meeting with all senior prison department officials.

During the meeting, Kumar expressed strong displeasure with the officials, citing repeated reports of mismanagement inside the jail.

He noted that six separate raids have been carried out at the Parappana Agrahara prison so far and each time, prohibited items such as mobile phones, SIM cards, sharp objects and other contraband items were uncovered. He questioned the officials how such items made their way into the prison.

On Friday, former city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao posted on X saying, “If he can’t clean the Prisons, I don’t see any other Officer who can…” To this, Alok Kumar replied saying, ” Will try my best sir”, with a folded hands emoji.

Videos of VVIP hospitality to prisoners at jail have previously gone viral on social media, prompting Alok Kumar to demand a detailed report on the status of all related cases.

Meanwhile, after learning of Kumar’s transfer as DGP, residents living near Parappana Agrahara central jail and the inmates have appealed for an investigation into problems caused by certain groups. Alok Kumar said he will visit the jail within a week and launch operations aimed at delivering a lasting solution to these issues.
