BELAGAVI: The Hindalga jail in Belagavi is witnessing a surge in mobile phone usage among inmates, despite the installation of a 5G jammer. The jail authorities had installed the jammer to prevent mobile phone usage, but inmates are still managing to use their phones.
The jammer, installed last year, has failed to block the Airtel network, while the Jio network has been blocked. Inmates are using Airtel SIM cards, which are being smuggled into the jail by outsiders, including relatives and friends.
In the past month, there have been three incidents of mobile phones being thrown into the jail, with the culprits escaping after wearing masks. Director General of Prisons, Alok Kumar, has instructed the jail authorities to take action and block the Airtel network.
