BAGALKOT: A deceased army man’s wife lost both her palms after a hair dryer exploded in her hands at Ilkal town four days ago. The impact of the explosion was so severe that the woman lost all her fingers and her palms had to be amputated in hospital.

The victim is Basamma Yarnal, wife of deceased soldier Papanna who had died in Jammu and Kashmir in 2017 due to an electrical short circuit. Her entire house was strewn with blood and pieces of her hands.

Shashikala, the wife of another deceased soldier, had received a courier in her name and with her phone number. When the courier company representatives called her, she told them that she was out of town and to hand over the package to Basamma Yarnal.

The package was sent from Bagalkot.

Shashikala then called Basamma and asked her to open the package and a hair dryer was found inside. A neighbour then suggested to Basamma to plug it in and switch it on when it exploded in Basamma’s hands. She is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ilkal.

Curiously, Shashikala claimed that she had not ordered the hair dryer. The appliance was manufactured by a company in Visakhapatnam and couriered from Bagalkot. The Ilkal police have registered a case and are looking into who ordered the hair dryer and who made the payment among other things.
