Dalai Lama turns 89, PM Modi wishes for long life, good health

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on his 89th birthday and prayed for his speedy recovery following knee surgery, as well as his continued good health and long life.

PM Modi sent birthday greetings to Dalai Lama on X and stated, “Sent my greetings to His Holiness @DalaiLama on the occasion of his 89th birthday. Pray for his quick recovery after knee surgery, good health, and a long life.”

The 14th Dalai Lama, known to the Tibetan people as Gyalwa Rinpoche, is the current Dalai Lama, also the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibet.

The birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was celebrated by his followers at the Kalchakra Monastery in West Bengal’s Siliguri.

Lama’s followers said they would celebrate July 6 as the ‘Universal Day of Compassion’ to honour the great contributions of the Dalai Lama towards a global mission for peace and harmony among humankind.

The followers of Dalai Lama offered prayers for his long life. They also cut birthday cake and performed cultural celebration.Large crowds gathered at the Kalchakra Monastery, since the morning, to celebrate Dalai Lama’s birthday.

Prayers were also organised to mark Dalai Lama’s birthday.Following this, the Tibet Monastery in Shimla echoed with special prayers, and the air smelt of roses as Buddhist monks offered prayers in front of the statue of Lord Buddha located here.

Buddhist monks and devotees celebrated the birthday of Dalai Lama by cutting a 25-pound cake.

In a special puja, Buddhist monks prayed for the long life of the Dalai Lama.The Dalai Lama, renowned globally for his teachings on compassion and peace, is currently recuperating following a successful knee surgery in the United States. The Dalai Lama was discharged from the hospital on June 29.(ANI)
