CHIKKAMAGALUR: A 38-year-old gram panchayat member and Congress leader who was also a director of the district Vokkaligara Sangha, was brutally murdered in Sakharayapatna on Friday night.

The incident occurred around 8.30 pm on Friday after Ganesh received a phone call from Sanjay Gowda, a rival, and was lured to a deserted area near the Kalmurudeshwara Temple, just a short distance from Sakharayapatna. There, Ganesh was attacked and killed with stones and sharp objects.

Earlier on Friday evening, Ganesh and Sanjay Gowda had a scuffle near a bar in Sakharayapatna over a flex banner issue. Locals intervened and separated them, but Sanjay Gowda allegedly called Ganesh and asked him to come to the Kalmurudeshwara Temple area, where he was attacked and killed.

The police have arrested two suspects, including Sanjay Gowda, and three others are still at large. The Congress party workers staged a protest on Saturday, demanding action against the accused. The police have formed a special team to investigate the case and are working to catch the remaining suspects and determine the motive behind the murder.
The police have appealed to the public to come forward with any information about the incident and the whereabouts of the accused. The case is being closely watched by the local authorities, and the police are leaving no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Ganesh was a Congress party worker and was planning to contest in the upcoming Zilla panchayat elections from Sakharayapatna hobli. His death has sent shockwaves in the local community, and his supporters are demanding justice. He was known for his social work and was considered a rising star in the Congress party.
