BELAGAVI: The Congress party on Friday held a condolence meeting at the venue of the CWC convention here following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The ‘Nav Satyagrah Baithak’ was called off following the former PM’s demise.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, ministers, legislators and party workers took part in the condolence meeting and observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect. A portrait of Dr Manmohan Singh was also placed on the dais and floral tributes were offered by the Congress leaders.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah noted that Singh hailed from a rural famly who went on to become one of the country’s leading financial experts. “He had worked in many fields and was soft-spoken. I had met him on several occasions and he would conduct himself with grace and patience. Manmohan Singh was responsible for the implementation of the Food Security Act, RTI Act and NREGA”, the CM said.
The Congress has organised its CWC meeting on December 26 and 27 in Belagavi to celebrate the centenary of the 1924 session of the party. Following Singh’s death, 180 Congress leaders including MP and CWC members headed to Delhi by a special flight from Sambra airport.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM Shivakumar, K J George, H C Mahadevappa, Byrathi Suresh, Ponnanna, M B Patil, Yathindra and Govindaraju returned to Bengaluru by another special flight and landed at the HAL airport.
