RAICHUR: The theft of coal, also known as ‘black gold’, has been rampant in Raichur. A small portion of coal meant for the Raichur thermal power station (RTPS) at Yermarus is being pilfered by contractors routinely and at least 35-40 tons of coal is being stolen from a rake’s 58 wagons.

With 3-4 rakes arriving daily, around 150 tons of coal is being siphoned off every day. The contractors, who have secured tenders for cleaning coal waste, are selling good quality coal to other factories and industries. Coal is being stored in large quantities near the railway station and transported via lorries and tractors.

Despite a previous expose by Public TV, the racket has resumed after about two years. Railway and KPTCL officials are turning a blind eye, and the scam is thriving. The theft involves removing coal from wagons during cleaning and replacing it with waste.

The coal theft is happening at Yermarus and Yadlapur railway stations, where contractors have secured tenders for cleaning coal waste. The rules stipulate that CCTV cameras should be installed, and cleanliness should be maintained. However, officials are colluding with contractors, allowing the theft to continue.

In November 2023, Public TV had exposed the scam, leading to an inquiry and the suspension of some officials. However, the racket has resumed, and coal is being stolen and sold to small industries and brick kilns. The daily theft of 150 tons of coal is a significant loss to the state.
