BENGALURU: Cases of myopia (short sight) among children are increasing due to excessive screen time during the Covid-19 pandemic and many in the state suffering from visual impairment.
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about a different problem for children. They are mostly addicted to electronic gadgets like mobile phones, computers, laptops and TV and spend most of their time on gadgets. Due to this, the rate of visual impairment in children has increased.
According to estimates by ophthalmologists, 50 per cent of children will suffer from myopia in 2050. In addition, 50 per cent of children visiting eye hospitals now are found to be suffering from myopia.
What is myopia?
Myopia is when close-up objects look clear but distant objects are blurry. Some of the symptoms of myopia are eye strain, headaches and squinting. Young children may require eye examination and vision tests for the diagnosis of myopia.
What are the recommendations doctors have given to reduce or prevent myopia?
- Children need to spend time outdoors every day in the sunlight.
- Children should be taken for regular checkups.
- Parents should limit their children’s screen time.
- Children should consume a balanced diet for healthy eyes.
“Myopia is a condition that cause visual impairment. One of the reasons for myopia among children is excessive use of electronic gadgets. Parents should look out for this problem in their children. According to studies, by 2050, more than 50 per cent of children will be affected. We provide treatment according to the needs of the children. There are helplines available to learn more about the condition”, said Dr Anusha K L, Paediatric Ophthalmologist.
“Parents should encourage kids to play outside, and limit their screen time. A balanced diet is also very important. When they read, they should sit in an illuminated room. Among the out-patients, about 50 per cent of children are seen to be suffering from myopia. Parents should take the children for routine check-ups and follow doctors’ advice”, she added.
