BENGALURU: Canadian MP Chandrakanth Arya ruled the internet on Friday after he addressed the parliament in Kannada, which he claimed was the first time ever in any parliament outside India.

Arya, who represents Nepean and belongs to the Liberty party, hails from Dvaralu village in Sira taluk of Tumakuru district. A three-time MP, he addressed the House in Kannada while talking oath and spoke of how proud he felt to be speaking in his mother tongue in the Canadian parliament. “I’m privileged to be allowed to speak in Kannada. It is a matter of pride for five crore Kannadigas,” he said.

Chandra Arya also recalled that Kannadigas in Canada had celebrated Rajyotsava in 2018. He ended his speech by quoting the famous lines from poet Kuvempu’s work “Ellaadaru Iru, Entaadaru Iru, Endendigoo Nee Kannadavaagiru”, which had been beautifully rendered by late thespian Dr Rajkumar.

Arya, who holds a BE and MBA degrees, joined a private company in Canada in 2003 and later joined politics.
