BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is planning to make it compulsory for new independent houses being constructed in the city to have grey water connection.
The BWSSB has come up with the plan as part of efforts to conserve water and minimise wastage of Cauvery water. This follows the water scarcity that was witnessed in the city last summer and the water board wants to prevent a recurrence of the situation in the coming days.
Grey water is basically recycled water used for bathing, washing vessels and clothes and which is used in the kitchen. For recycling this, new houses will have to have separate pipelines for grey water and sanitary water.
The grey water can be stored in synthetic tanks and after recycling, it can be used for gardening and flushing toilets. With this, use and wastage of Cauvery water can be minimised, the BWSSB feels.
Residents will have to ensure that no waste like shampoo or soap covers, dirt, etc., enters the grey water and a separate soak pit can be created for it. Due to the release of grey water directly into the sanitary lines, the pipes are getting clogged and recycling grey water can minimise water wastage, the board feels.
