Boy’s death: BBMP to take up inspection of all parks, playgrounds in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Following the death of a 10-year-old boy after an old, rusty gate fell on him at the BBMP Ground in Malleswaram on Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to check the condition of all playgrounds and parks in the city.

Palike Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has instructed officials to conduct an inspection by next month and submit a report. If there is laxity on part of the officials, action will be taken, he warned.

There was much public outrage after the death of Niranjan, a Class 5 student at the BBMP School in Malleswaram. Niranjan was standing near the gate when it fell on him as it opened, causing severe head injuries. He died on the spot. Niranjan was the eldest son of Vijay Pawar, an auto driver, and Priya, residents of Malleswaram Pipeline Road.

Following the incident, Deputy D K Shivakumar and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had visited the family to offer condolences and provide compensation.

Tushar Giri Nath said, “We will inspect all the parks and playgrounds in the city and we will use the funds earmarked for development to ensure that such incidents do not recur. I have sought a report by next month and if there is any laxity on the part of the engineers, actions will be taken”.
