HAVERI: Former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa called on voters in Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency to come out in numbers and demonstrate their support for senior party colleague and the BJP’s pick from the seat, Basavaraj Bommai.

Speaking at a roadshow that he was front-lining in favour of Bommai on Friday, the stalwart Lingayat leader said, “I call on workers of the BJP and the JDS (NDA ally) to work together here and elsewhere in the state. They should visit every house and stay connected to the people till the last vote is cast”.

Stating further that the people of Haveri wish to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former PM and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda campaigning jointly in the constituency, the former CM added, “Everyone must put in a sincere and dedicated effort to send Bommai to the Lok Sabha by a big margin. Bommai will win by a margin of over two lakh votes”, he added for good measure.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi, accusing him of betraying the trust of citizens by failing to keep promises made over the past decade. Siddaramaiah claimed that neither the BJP, which he claimed to have failed to fulfil its promises, nor the JD(S), which he accused of lacking morality by associating with the former, deserve to win people’s support and electoral confidence.

Coming down heavily on former PM Deve Gowda, the CM said while the BJP failed its promises to the people, the JDS lost its moral standing by aligning with the ruling party at the Centre. “Deve Gowda, who once threatened to leave the country if (Narendra) Modi became Prime Minister, has now embraced the same leader. It is nothing but his illusion that the Congress government in the state will collapse after the Lok Sabha elections”, CM Siddaramaiah said.

The 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka will poll in two phases–on April 26 and May 7. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and JDS fought together against the BJP and, yet, the combine was decimated. The BJP won a record 25 seats, while the Congress and the JDS won just one seat each. (ANI)
