BENGALURU: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s Cabinet, which met here on Saturday, has approved raising the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the state.
The cabinet also decided to introduce a Bill in this regard in the winter session of the legislature to be held in Belagavi. A notification on increasing the reservation will be issued on Saturday, to mark Valmiki Jayanti, Law Minister J C Madhuswamy told reporters.
On Friday, an all-party meeting, chaired by the CM, arrived at a consensus on increasing reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) by 2 per cent and for Scheduled Tribes (STs) by 4 per cent.
A committee, headed by retired High Court judge Nagmohan Das, had recommended increasing the reservation for SCs from the existing 15 per cent to 17 per cent, and for STs from 3 per cent to 7 per cent.
Madhuswamy said the cabinet met on Saturday to approve the recommendation of the Nagamohan Das committee report. He also said the Justice A J Sadashiva committee report on internal reservation will also be implemented. The cabinet has tasked the Law Minister with this and the report will be studied and a report submitted, he said.
The minister said the government notification will elaborate how the reservation will be raised. He also said that how much reservation should be reduced for other categories will be decided after consultations.
“We will have to work it out based on the Justice Subash Adi committee report that went into quota demands. A decision on internal reservation will be taken after a committee headed by the Law minister submits its report”, he said.
