SHIVAMOGGA: A devastating landslide at Hulikal (Balebere) Ghat in Shivamogga district has claimed the lives of three people and left four others injured. The incident took place during the repair work on the ghat’s concrete wall, which collapsed on Thursday, burying several workers under the debris.
The search and rescue operation was carried out by the SDRF, fire brigade and police teams, who worked tirelessly to retrieve the bodies of the victims. While two bodies were recovered on Thursday night, one more was recovered on Friday morning. The bodies of Ragu (37), Raju (30) and Shabbir (40) were recovered from the debris on Friday, and their post-mortem examination was conducted at the Shimoga city hospital.

Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and has instructed the authorities to bear the medical expenses of the injured. The district administration has also closed the Hulikal Ghat road to traffic until further notice, causing significant disruption to the traffic.
Former minister Kimmanne Rathnakar and MLA Araga Jnanendra visited the site and expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. The district Deputy Commissoner Prabhuling Kavalikatti also visited the site reviewed the situation, and directed the PWD officials to take immediate action to restore the damaged section of the ghat.
The authorities have urged travellers to use alternative routes until the road is reopened. The authorities have assured the grieving families of the victims of all possible assistance and support.
