BMTC to scrap 990 buses by 2023-end

BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has planned to scrap 990 old buses which have clocked the mandated kilometres and are in poor condition.

The BMTC buses have to fulfill a couple of conditions before they to scrap. Regular buses must have served for 12 years or travelled 8.5 lakh kilometers. Volvo buses must have served for 15 years or 10.5 lakh kilometres. Only after either of these conditions are met, the buses are phased out from service.

“We have some pre-conditions for scrapping the old buses. It must be at least 12 years old and have travelled at least 8.5 lakh kilometers while Volvo bus should run at least 15 years before being scrapped. By the end of this year, at least 400 buses will be scrapped and the remaining buses will be continued and scrapped in the coming year. When we scrap a bus, we get a minimum of Rs 2 lakh to 2.5 lakh. We have already scrapped 292 buses and we have got approximately Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh in revenue for each bus scrapped. We do e-auctions through MSTC portal and scrap dealers participate in the tender process”, said Suryasen, IT director, BMTC.
