BENGALURU: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has been the lifeline for lakhs of commuters in the city. At the same time, the buses belonging to the transport utility have also been involved in the deaths of many, making it a matter of concern.

About five people have lost their lives in the last three months and 150 people have died in accidents involving BMTC buses in last four years. Whether the BMTC drivers were at fault in all the cases, or whether other motorists were at fault is debatable.

Accidents and Deaths Involving BMTC Buses in 4 Years:

  • In 2018-19, 50 people died in 258 accidents.
  • In 2020-21, there were 22 deaths in 98 accidents.
  • In 2021-22, 38 people were killed in 133 accidents.
  • In 2022-23, there were 155 accidents which left 45 dead.
  • In all these years, there were 544 accidents which took the lives of 155 people.

There could be several factors for the accidents which include the running condition of the bus, the drivers’ state of mind while at the wheel, overspeeding, rash driving and rush among drivers to complete the mandated trips.

The other transport utility, the KSRTC, too faced a similar situation with its drivers. After a study, the KSRTC had counselled its drivers.
