BENGALURU: Following the recent incident of the Metro pillar crash, which led to the death of a woman and her child, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) employees’ union has now written to the corporation requesting for a quality check of all the Metro pillars in the city.
Every day, thousands of people commute using the ‘Namma Metro’ around the city. The BMRCL employees’ union has requested that the government and BMRCL do a quality check of all the Metro pillars. In a letter, the employees’ union has requested to take the help of qualified IISc and IIT faculty to check the quality and durability of the Metro pillars.
The BMRCL employees’ union has cited many reasons for the need to carry out an inspection of the Metro pillars. It said that the Metro work must be of the highest quality and that the pillars, joints and track should last about 100 years old and there should not be any problem for at least 10 years after the inauguration.
“The load on the metro pillar is higher than its capacity. An additional coach has been added to the Metro train. The pressure on the pillars may have increased as Metro is looking to rake in profits. Due to this, there is a possibility of cracking in the pillar. Therefore, all Metro pillars need quality checks. I also feel there is an underhand dealing between the contactor and management”, said Suryanarayana Murthy, vice-president, BMRCL employees’ union.
