BMRCL plans to double the number of trains

BENGALURU: Amidst the rising traffic congestion in the city, Namma Metro has something to cheer about. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) plans to double the number of trains in order to provide better convenience and faster commute for passengers.

Already, metro trains are operating on three lines, and orders have been placed for new trains on two new routes as well as on the existing routes, which will double the number of metro trains.

Namma Metro has ordered 96 new trains and 516 coaches. At present, Namma Metro runs 63 trains along the Green line, Purple, and Yellow lines combined. The Green and Purple lines together have 57 trains, while the Yellow line has six trains.

For the Green and Purple lines, 21 new trains each are on the way and for the Yellow line, nine trains will be added. Apart from this, an additional six trains have been ordered. For the Kalena Agrahara‑to‑Nagawara (Pink Line) segment, 16 trains are planned, with an extra seven trains ordered, bringing the total to 23 trains for the Pink Line, according to BMRCL’s Chief Public Relations Officer Yashvanth Chavan.

The Chief Public Relations Officer also said that 16 trains are ordered for the Silk Board‑to‑KR Puram stretch, 21 trains for the  KR Puram‑to‑Kempegowda International Airport stretch and a total of 37 trains for the Blue Line.

“With the arrival of new trains on the existing Purple, Green and Yellow lines and the upcoming Blue and Pink two lines, metro trains will start running every threee minutes. Currently, we have 63 trains; with the addition of 96 new trains, the total fleet will become 159 trains”, Chavan pointed out.
