BENGALURU: In what may come as a shocker for Namma Metro users, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is mulling hiking fares. The Metro is the lifeline for commuting for lakhs of people every day in the city.

The Metro authorities say the fare hike is necessary to increase safety at the stations. Of late, there have been a few instances of people ending their lives on Metro tracks. To curb this, the BMRCL is planning to install platform screen doors (PSD) at the Metro stations.

The BMRCL authorities pointed out that installing PSDs at each station will cost about Rs 6-7 crore and hence, they are planning to increase fares to raise revenue to meet the cost. While no decision has been taken yet, discussions are on regarding increasing the fares in about 2-3 months time.
