BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning to hire train operators on a contract basis to operate trains on new routes and has invited tenders which are open to private companies for participation.

These companies will provide training and employ the loco pilots, raising concerns that they may bring in train operators from outside Karnataka rather than hiring locals.

The BMRCL has justified this move, stating that it will save time as the selected companies will provide training to the operators. The corporation mentioned that a similar model is being followed in the Chennai and Hyderabad metros.

According to BMRCL officials, new recruits will undergo training for six months before operating trains on new routes. This move has sparked concerns about the potential influx of outsiders in the job market, with some questioning the corporation’s priorities regarding local employment opportunities.

Yashwant Chavan, Chief Public Relations Officer, BMRCL, said, “The trained operators are working in existing Metro lines. Other states are also following the contractual or outsourcing model, so we are also following suit. Loco pilots are needed to the upcoming Reach 5 and Reach 6 lines. We are planning to open Reach 5 soon and it may take six months to train new operators”.

“When we think about the future, outsourcing is a better plan for now. The contracted firm will charge on the number of hours the train operators work. The agency will provide training to the loco pilots so there is no need for us to train them again. The BMRCL has already invited tenders and August 25 is the last date to apply. We have a particular number in mind and we will hire them according to the requirement”.
